Dear supporters:

Last week (Jan 4th & 5th) Donna and I were in Thunder Bay for the cross-examinations of our expert witnesses. These witnesses have submitted material that will be used in the constitutional challenge of the Firearms Act (Bill C-68).

Present at the hearings were our lawyer Calvin Martin, expert witnesses Professor Gary Mauser of Simon Fraser university and Dave Tomlinson of the NFA, the crown counsels Peter Keene and Buster Young. Also present were two of the arresting officers Randall Belluz and Wade Meeks, although I'm not sure why. The first day Professor Gary Mauser took the stand and the second day Dave Tomlinson took the stand.

The crown spent most of their efforts attacking the validity of our witnesses as being "expert". Near the end of Professor Mauser's cross-examination the crown (Keene) had an emotional outburst. I think the crown was getting tired of attacking Professor Mauser's credibility and were frustrated by not being able to tear apart any of his research that was presented. This concluded Professor Mauser's cross-examination and we adjourned for the day.

Friday (Jan. 5th) Dave Tomlinson took the stand. We were prepared for a very long day, since he had submitted a lot of material to be cross-examined. The crown spent a couple of hours attacking Mr. Tomlinson's credibility then abruptly finished with their questions. I think they learned from the previous day that it may not be fruitful to question all the technical details that were presented. They probably realized that they were in over their heads with being able to refute the testimony that was presented to them. However, on March 12th they will have to deal with Mr. Tomlinson's submissions in front of the judge.

The firearms community owes a debt of gratitude to Professor Mauser and Dave Tomlinson for their willingness to offer their expertise and testify as to the unconstitutionality of the Firearms Act. They have both generously donated their time and efforts for this cause. I have thanked them in person and publicly thank them again here:

Our next major step in this fight will be the hearing set for the week of March 12th in the Superior Court at Kenora Ontario. If you can make it out to this historic hearing it would be great to see you there! On another note, funds are also starting to get low.
